Furuno DS-80
Log FURUNO DS- 80
The DS-80 is a log from FURUNO that uses the Doppler principle to measure the speed of a vessel relative to water. It works by measuring the Doppler frequency shift of the signal reflected from the water mass and outputs an output signal in IEC 61162-1 format, which can be transmitted to SARP, AIS and other on-board equipment.
The DS-80 has several features that make it easy to use. In most cases, it is enough to simply turn on the device to determine the speed of the vessel. The system with a pair of beams allows you to effectively reduce the error caused by pitching. The converter unit emits two sound beams, one forward and the second backward, which allows you to achieve accurate speed readings in rough seas.
Information about the speed and distance traveled is displayed on the LCD display, which has a contrast adjustment. In addition, an optional supply of an analog display, a digital indicator and a digital distance indicator is possible. DS-80 complies with IMO resolution A.824(19) and IEC 61023:1997.
However, in cases where there is no reflected signal in the measuring area, which is usually about 2 meters, due to the small amount of plankton, the DS-80 will not give correct readings of the vessel's speed. This phenomenon can be observed in spring in the Sea of Okhotsk and in freshwater lakes.
