is the second generation of communication satellites from Iridium Communications. This system allows replacing the currently operating satellite constellation of Iridium spacecraft. Communication satellites are in low-earth orbit and provide voice and data communications for mobile devices.
The Iridium NEXT
includes 66 low Earth orbiting satellites, which are located in 6 polar orbits. Iridium NEXT
provides higher communication speeds and the ability to further expand the capacity of the satellite industry. In the new network, the data transfer rate reaches 1.4 Mbps.
Each Iridium NEXT
satellite is connected to four others, which together create a dynamic network that provides a continuous connection. This unique configuration allows services using the Iridium network to be unaffected by natural disasters (hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes) that can damage the ground infrastructure. Iridium Next is fully compatible with the first generation network and supports all its functions and coverage area.
